Winter Wonderland!

Christmas is in full swing in St. Clare's Class! We have made some beautiful Christmas cards, produced and costed fabulous decorations and we have made Advent promises.

Yesterday, we had a delicious Christmas lunch. Today we had a super Christmas party (with thanks to everyone who brought in food and drink!) followed by a beautiful afternoon at St. Thomas More Church. We all sang lots of lovely carols, listened to the Bible readings and watched the children from Reception perform the Nativity scenes brilliantly.

Tomorrow, we will have our CARE assembly in the morning. It will be Toy Day tomorrow- you can bring in a small, non-valuable toy to play with. Make sure you bring in something that you are happy to share with others; nothing electronic or battery powered please.

Remember you will also need a carrier bag tomorrow- there will be lots of bits to take home!

Armistice Day Party!

Today we ended our work on World War One, by celebrating the end of the war! Today at St. Anthony's was Armistice Day- we marched around the school declaring the end of the war, then had a special celebration in class.

We took turns to make toasts with our "champagne"; to the King and country, to those we had lost ('The Fallen'), to Great Britain...

Following the toasts and speeches, we listened to some music from 1918 and danced as they would have done in the Armistice Day parties held in London.

Some of the children even dressed in clothes that might have been worn in 1918.

This has been a fantastic topic, rounded off by a wonderful celebration of the return to peacetime (although we now know that it didn't last too long...).

Well done!

Congratulations St. Clare's Class on a fantastic assembly! You all performed brilliantly today and we were very proud of you! We had lots of lovely comments from children, visitors and the other teachers; they all thought it was an excellent assembly and they were very impressed by your acting talents. Well done!

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who came to support the children. We hope you enjoyed it!

Around Our Classroom This Week!

Christmas has arrived in St. Clare's! Take a look around our classroom this week:

This week, we also made our own silver donkeys, after reading to the end of our fantastic class novel 'The Silver Donkey'.

Our Class Poem

Yesterday, we returned to The Battle of the Somme. We imagined being at the battle, then used a zone of relevance diagram to sort which adjectives would be best to describe the experience.

Then, we worked with our house teams to write some lines of poetry about the battle. We especially tried to include Mrs Parrott's favourite poetic features; metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration and repetition.

Next, we worked together to choose an order for the lines to go, to make a poem.

Finally, we broke the poem into verses and added the punctuation we needed. The last step was to add a title for our masterpiece!

Here is our final poem:

Running With Blood

Sharp-eyed soldiers,
The pain within trapped like a fly in a spider’s web,
My boots, my boots, they sink into the sucking mud,
The lice bite into your skin like a jaguar chomps into its prey,
Rats devouring flesh hungrily,
My feet tremble as I see people drunk with fatigue.

The bullet hunts me like I am its prey…
Several shocking shells were out to kill me.

BOOM, CRACK, CRASH go the frightening shells as shadows fall behind them,
Shrapnel flying through the sky, killing soldiers as they fly,
Shells more colossal than gigantic elephants,
Bullets as sharp as knives.

Dead mean dropping like autumn leaves,
Bang flash! Everything goes black.
Death comes to greet me like an old friend…

Last week we had a fantastic day out at the Imperial War Museum.

We had a hands-on session with a teacher from the museum, then spent some time exploring the World War One galleries.

We saw some fascinating artefacts and learned so many new things!
